I don’t believe you can get all the nutrition you need to optimize your health through diet alone. Shocking right?!
This is one of the reasons I prescribe supplements. Yes, nutrient SUFFICIENCY can be achieved through food only. However, most of us aren’t striving for sufficiency. We all want to OPTIMIZE. And optimization requires more than the RDA (recommended daily allowance). To achieve clinical results, we need clinical doses and that can’t always be achieved through food. For example, some of my clients require high doses of vitamin B12 to support their mental health. Levels much higher than you could ever achieve through a diet of eggs, dairy and meat (which are the top B12 containing foods). And I haven’t even touched on the fact that most of our produce is devoid of important minerals and vitamins due to modern agricultural processes that increase crop yields but disturb soil health. These include irrigation, fertilization, and harvesting methods that disrupt essential interactions between plants and soil fungi, which reduces absorption of nutrients from the soil. This is an even trickier issue if you consume a plant based diet. Bottom line, in this day and age, you can’t rely on diet alone to optimize your health.
